Of its own kind

There’s a Latin phrase I’ve always liked: sui generis — meaning “of its own kind.”

In business, that’s the holy grail: creating something so unique that it stands alone. Blue oceans. Distinct value. A category of one.

But it’s not just for brands. It’s for people too.

I think we’ve all met someone who fit that description. Maybe a few. The person whose presence was unmistakable, whose generosity knew no bounds, who left a mark on everyone around them. Yeah, there are phrases for that too, like they light up the room.

One of those for me was my Aunt, Bis. You knew if she was there. You knew if the gift at a white elephant came from her. You knew it was her game we were playing around the holidays (and yes, it was because someone usually ended up crying). My Grandma was another. To say she marched to the beat of her own drum is an understatement.

Words don’t do it justice. They were both sui generis.

For a moment, imagine living in a way that leaves that kind of impact. Filling your orbit with such passion, creativity, and love that your presence becomes undeniable.

Being of its own kind isn’t about being the loudest in the room. It’s about being unforgettable in the right ways — through generosity, creativity, integrity, and the kind of passion that makes people better for having been around you.
