THE SPARK

Asleep at the Wheel

It’s really easy to settle into a place of comfort (or fear) and the often unintended consequences that can follow. In fact, there are plenty of phrases that get thrown around that reinforce this sentiment:

  • “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
  • “That’s just the way it’s always been.”
  • “It’s good enough for Government work.”
  • “Just going through the motions.”

There are plenty of reasons we might find ourselves coasting.

After all, it can be a daunting feeling to look up a mountain from the base knowing you have to climb it.

But this is how the things worth doing often present themselves; intimidating, sometimes impossible.

It’s far more difficult to challenge the things that appear to be working, that have us on autopilot, than to continue to check the box and get by.

But getting by isn’t thriving.

I’m sure you can think of a time when you pushed beyond what was expected, or what you anticipated being possible, and the surge of energy it brought you.

Those moments stand out because they require courage and a willingness to face discomfort, and because they bring us far more satisfaction on the other side.

Try to keep a pulse on the areas you might be settling. The areas in life you catch yourself asleep at the wheel.

Share those thoughts with someone if you’re comfortable.

Or just acknowledge them to yourself if not.

It can be difficult to look in the mirror, but this kind of self-reflection is rewarding.

What is it that they say? The climb to the top is difficult, but the view is worth it..
